Flying Unicorn challengee - Where I live

One of the international members at the Flying Unicorn challenged us to do a layout about where we live.  The subject could be anything as long as it pertained to where we live.  I was rummaging around in my paper stash and pulled out the gorgeous Prima Almanac collection.  I can't beleive I've had this paper for a year and haven't used it!!  I thought its colors were perfect to do with this photo of our house taken in the very early spring.  This was taken the first spring after we built our house and the cherry blossoms are just beginning to bloom.  Its interesting to see how much our trees and shrubs have grown since planting them in the fall of 2008.

I used a Crafter's Workshop mask and black gesso for the diamond pattern on the right.  The heart buttos at the bottom are from the Romance Novel collection.  Top left is a Dusty Attic arch covered with aged white embossing powder.  I even dug out my sewing maching and did some stitching and that is something I rarely do!!  However, I recently "remodeled" my scrappy space and now have my machine out where I can easily access it so hope to add more stitching, it really adds a nice finishing touch to a layout I think.

Help Escape Kitty and Chena Win!

Escape Kitty and Chena need your help! Jen (Jrabs) has three little stories featuring Escape Kitty and Chena for a contest. The judges are looking for "LIKES" and comments/feedback n the stories. PLEASE help Chena and Kitty out by:

1. reading their stories as told by Jen
2. Liking them
3. Making comments - feedback. that would help me out a great deal and maybe help Kitty and Chena win big!!

Thanks so much, Kitty and Chena have a HUGE travel budget you know, so they really need to win!!

CSI case #47 - Chena and Escape Kitty in San Francisco

I have been having lots of fun with Chena and Escape Kitty!  Those two are such adventurers.  Well I thought they would turn up in Napa Valley at a vineyard but instead, here they are at Fisherman's Whart hanging out with the sea lions!

I used this weeks color palette from case # 47 from CSI.  This is a great color challenge site, be sure and check it out.

I used the the Sept KOM from the Flying Unicorn for this LO plus some added embellies from my stash.

The evidence -Frames - small Polaroid frame at the top
Greenery - floral leaves
Flourishes - in the Dusty Attic corner pieces

Testimony -Welcome to San Francisco Kitty and Chena!

Hmmm it does not appear that the sea lions have given you a very warm welcome. I mean they are all asleep, you know? Since you’ve never met a sea lion before, I have these words of wisdom for you.

• Do not offend the sea lions, they are bigger than you!
• Do not steal their fish Kitty, I know you like fish but seriously, you are very small and they are very big!!
• Do not push that sea lion in the water that you are cozied up to, that is rude and then the other sea lions might push you in the water and we all know that Kitty hates to get her fur wet.
• Chena do not mock them by barking like they do.
• Do not call them names like Whiskers, Blubbers, and the like, they might call you lunch and that would not be a good thing!

G45 Birdsong

Ohhhh how I love the G45 Birdsong collection!!  The colors are so lush and so rich and the graphics are fabulous, I wish I had some photos that would work well with it, but no matter, I was determined to use the paper and here's what I came up with.  I fussy cut the geshia in the middle and the birds and flowers.  I did this as inspiration for my CT challenge at the Flying Unicorn, the challenge is to use a poem on your project.  The Haiku is on the tag and says,
Yearning fills my heart
When the candles are lit;
Cherry blossom fall.

Birdsong is available in the Flying Unicorn store, check out the collection here.

CSI case #46 - Chena and Escape Kitty

The Flying Unicorn is a proud permanent sponsor for CSI, and this month the Flying Unicorn CT was invited to be guest detectives!  So I've been having lots of fun solving the color palette this month!

Case #46 features a paletter of brilliant purple and hues of green-yellow.  Purple always throws me for a loop but I gave it my best!

Here we have that famous duo off on another adventure. Escape Kitty and Chena heading west!

Why so solemn and sad Deputy Chena and Sheriff Kitty? Is hitchhiking not working out for you? Well its no wonder, neither of you have thumbs, and that is an essential part of anatomy needed for hitchhiking! I bet everyone is afraid to pick you up ‘cause you look like escapees from a circus or a carnival with that cowgirl gear on.

So… are you having to walk out west? It is a long ways but don’t fret, perhaps you and Kitty can write a famous book when you’re done with your trip, you know kinda like Homeward Bound. Hey, then you can pay me and Jen back for all the charges on our credit cards!

I really don’t know where Chena and Kitty are headed. She barked something about wanted to see the U.S. Now I do know that Kitty and Chena do like the finer things in life and I am just guessing they are on their way to California to enjoy the good life at a vineyard somewhere. I suppose Kitty could get a job as a mouser in a wine cellar. I’m not sure what Chena could do, but please Chena, don’t eat the grapes, they can make you very very sick. I think she’d make a great tour guide don’t you?

Stay tuned, I am expecting more photos – Chena loves to pee-mail photos to me. I am not sure how she takes pictures, lacking fingers and all that. I guess she found some sweet soul to take this picture for her. She probably pushed the camera into their hands and looked at them with those sweet sad puppy eyes. Yeah, she gets her way a lot just by giving me “those eyes.”

Thank you Jen (jrabs) for letting me use this fabulous photo of Kitty and Chena and for allowing Chena to play with Kitty!!  Be sure and visit Kitty's blog too, and read the rest of the stories!!

20% off all Christmas Products at the Flying Unicorn!

Hi there scrappers, Maggi here to show off my sweet great niece and the G45 Nutcracker Sweet collection.   I love the rich vibrant colors that  G45 always comes up with and this collection is no exception.

I got out my border punches and kinda went nuts for this layout, I wanted a real girly lacey look to my layout.  I also layered in some white slip lace.  I fussy cut the ballerina and popped her up with foam squares.  The little gingerbread man tag is a chipboard piece from the collection.  I mixed Prima poinsettias with a Petaloo Cantebury poinsettia vine

Here's another Nutcracker Sweet project I did, it's a little box, the bow on the front unties and the roof flips back so that you can fill with candies or a tiny gift, whatever comes to your mind.  I made this from a challenge and tutorial that fellow CT member Tammy posted last month.

And here's one more Christmas project from last year to share with you, my sweet Nika from her very first Christmas.  I used Riddersholm The Day Before Christmas and I Believe collections for this, these are great papers and still available in th store.  The poinsettia was made with a Sizzix die and painted with red Glimmer Glam.

Be sure and check out the Christmas lines at the  Flying Unicorn store - 20% off all Christmas products from now through the end of November!

Flying Unicorn and CSI case file #45

The Flying Unicorn is proud ot be a permanent sponsor CSI - Color...Stories...Inspiration,,,. a wonderful challenge site designed to challenge and inspire you with their weekly color and journaling challenges.  We are also proud of our creative team member Adrienne Ford who is also a member of the design team at CSI!

I created this layout using the fabulous Flying Unicorn November KOM, Solace for the Heart.  This kit is full of vintage goodness and includes papers from Teresa Collins Vintage Finds, Authentique Peaceful, Cosmos Cricket Evangeline collections as well as an eclectic collection of embellishments that are sure to enhance your projects.  Our main kit always includes an Off the Page Project too.

For this layout I used mostly the Authentique Peaceful collection.

CSI Case file #45 - This is a beautiful earthy color palette of soft beiges, brown and sage.

Evidence - I've used a book page print behind the cut circles and all my paper has a beautiful texture. I especially love the texture of the tatted Maya Road flowers I used. Ok that evidence is a bit weak, sorry, I am a new detective and I will get better!!

Testimony - Well my family is kind of unusual as it includes two poodles, one that drives and one that thinks she is human. What???? No I'm not kidding.

Many of you have "met" Chena. She is the sidekick and traveling companion of the ever famous Escape Kitty. Those two began their travels in Alaska when Chena "borrowed" our motorhome and drove to New York to help Kitty escape and off they went to the wilds of Alaska. They are currently cavorting out west somewhere. I get the occasional pee mail from Chena. You know, when dogs are sniffing around trees and posts and stuff? Well they're reading their pee mail!! And you just thought they were looking for a good spot, HA!

It is really kinda funny how my family parallels Jen's (jrabs) family, she has Stay Behind Kitty, and I have Nika. Noodle as Nika is more frequently called, is my sweet love, she's the one that cuddles with me for hours, she is so afraid of the great big world out there, Just like Stay Behind Kitty, she would NEVER embark on an adventure like Chena does. Her idea of a good time is to follow me around the house all day. She has no self esteem, no self confidence; her whole world depends on my well being. She won't even go outside by herself; she always waits for Chena or me to come with her. What a silly dog. Ah but this is a really important piece of evidence, she doesn't know she's a dog! She loves to walk on 2 legs just like a human and often approaches me on two legs. She puts her front paws on my shoulders and give me a big human hug.

While Chena may be the famous one in the cyberworld, Noodle has stolen the heart of my scrappy friends that come every year for a weekend of wine, doggie kisses, southern hospitality, photo ops and of course scrapping!! They are both my family and I love them beyond words, and oh yeah, I love my dh too, he is awesome.

Thanks for visiting my blog and I hope you'll visit me at the Flying Unicorn!

Come join my challenge this month at the Flying Unicorn!

POETRY IN MOTION!

Anyone remember that song?  Bobby Vee sang it, early 1960's.

Well anyway, let's see what my November challenge at the Flying Unicorn is all about!  I would like you to find a bit of poetry and do a layout with the poem as your journaling and the subject of the poem must be the subject of your project.  You can do a layout, card, tag, whatever your heart desires.

I used the Flying Unicorn November KOM, Solace for the Heart, for this LO.  The papers are a mix of Teresa Collins Vintage Finds and Authentique Peaceful.  I  used a TCW fern stencil and molding paste for  the stencils on the left and used Fireworks mist for the others on the right.  I also stamped a few trees on the background.  The burlap flag and small green rose are in the kit.  The large green flowers are Petaloo and from my stash and available in the store.

The poem is Trees by Joyce Kilmer, I've always loved this poem and every couple of years I scrap this poem.  This is my 3rd layout using this poem!

The Flying Unicorn kits go on sale at 12:01 am the 3rd of every month and are not available on a subscription basis.  We believe that art is a passion and not a monthly obligation.

Here's some more inspiration, the poem is Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken.

I will have some more inspiration for you on Nov 3rd!

All the challenges at the Flying Unicorn end with a RAK being awarded to one random lucky winner chosen at the end of the month.

I hope you'll join in the fun at our challenges.

More of the November Flying Unicorn kit, Solace for the Heart

This kit worked so well for me - I love vintage styling!  All the kit elements worked so well for me to scrap this picture of my Dad and me when we returned from France, it's one of my favorite photos! That little coat I am wearing is red I believe and that poor doll in my arms - notice her hair is sticking straight up, well that's how I usually carried her. LOL, doll abuse!

Most everything on this page is from the November kit, I did add a sheet of Core'dinations for the base page.  One of the great things about the Flying Unicorn kits is the unusual products that are included. I made the orange leaves with the included clay and mold in the kit and painted with included Smooch paint. I also made the white flowers also from clay.  The doily and gingham ribbon are also from my stash.

We have a lot of great challenges going on at the Flying Unicorn every month and I did this for Stephanies recipe challenge.  Each of our challenges have a randomly chosen winner too!

Solace for the Heart - Flying Unicorn KOM

I h ave more creations to show you that I did with the November Flying Unicorn kit!  I love the great combination of Teresa Collins Vintage Finds, Authentique Peaceful and Cosmo Cricket Evangeline papers.  You can create a lot of fabulous projects with these papers and all the great embellies!

Our main kit always includes an off the page project and the November kit includes a burlap canvas panel.   This is the house that my father was born in, its an old house out in the country, across the road from a country church.  Funny thing about those tanks that you see in front of the house.  We recently had a family reunion and I told my aunt that she needed to tell her son to get those tanks out of the way so I could get a really good photo of the house.   So she says to to me, "Let me tell you why those tanks are there" and she proceeds to tell me that a cow got up under the house and got stuck; everytime it tried to come out from under the house it would bang its head on the floor joists so they had to used a tractor to pull the cow out!  I swear, that's what she told me, if anyone but her had told me that story I would have thought they were trying to sell me a bridge in Brooklyn.

I used a lot of things from mystash for this, the yellow flowers are an old Prima vine, they are the color of dried tobacco leaves - that is some symbolism for me. The green flowers are Petaloo Darjeeling and came from the Flying Unicorn store, they are a favorite bloom of mine. I added some miniature pine cones that I found in the Christmas dept at HL to complete the floral cluster. The clock is a metal Tim Holtz piece, the frame is Teresa Collins blingage that I used copper rubz on to change it from silver. I dabbed some paint on the Prima felt branches, I was tryingto achieve a dappled light look, not sure that what I got but oh well! The flourish is Recollections.

For this next layout, I used a photo is from our recent road trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway of Mabry Mill which is situated on the Parkway in NC. It is such a gorgeous mill and the paddle wheel still turns. There is also an old cabin situated on the grounds and some other relics from yesteryear. I added Dusty Attic chicken wire and branches. The chicken wire and cogs from the kit are embossed with Stampendous aged gold embossing powder. Have I mentioned how much I love that stuff???  Check it out in the Flying Unicorn store, you will love it!  I also used TCW 12 x 12 tiles mask on the background Cosmo Cricket paper. The other papers are Teresa Collins.

Thanks for stopping by, hope you'll check out the great kits from the Flying Unicorn.  They are truely one of a kind!

Escape Kitty and Chena**Nov KOM Flying Unicorn**

The Flying Unicorn Nov KOM, Solace for the Heart, is packed with fabulous papers and embellies.  Here's the first LO I did featuring that famous duo Escape Kitty and Chena!

So here are the famous duo, Chena and Escape Kitty. I have no idea where those two are right now, last I heard they were hitchhiking out west, you know those two, always looking for adventure. Looks like they've stopped en route to have their portrait made.  Look at them in their western wear, I hear Kitty is running for Sherriff and you know Chena will be Deputy Dawg!  Election day is Tuesday, be sure to get out and vote Escape Kitty for Sheriff!!

Meanwhile,  I know they love the finer things in life soI am expecting to find them in Napa Valley relaxing at a spa somewhere sipping on some vino!!

Thanks to Kitty's Mom, Jen aka Jrabs for the wonderful photo of Kitty and Chena.
