 Here's what I did with this challenge.  The Pink Paislee Mistable papers are perfect for working with all your mixed medias because it is such a heavy weight paper.  This page has a honeycomb resist image on it; I used some gesso to cover part of it so that the resist only showed thru in partial areas,

 

 

 

Evidence:  Lots of circles - from the red stamped circles to the white circles that I made with the bottom of my gesso jar, LOL!!  Then we have that sweet resin bird there and all my papers are distressed as a final bit of evidence.

Love these Prima tags in the May Flying Unicorn kit!

Today I am sharing a video with you, showing the techniques I used to make this tag!   I used one of  those great long Prima tags that came in the May kit.
   



You know how you keep dinking with a project after you think its finished?  Yeah, that happened to this tag after I finished up the video.  I decided to bling it up a little bit and added the gold rhinestones on the chevron striped tag and the Flying Unicorn Adornments Butterfly.  Then I added some ribbon and fiber at the top and tucked in a little burlap on the left side!

Flying Unicorn May KOM Coffee & Muse BAP

Vintage Styling in Color!


Hi everyone!  Maggi here to share my vintage styling with you using the Flying Unicorn's May kit, Coffee and Muse.  Typically, vintage styles have alot of darker tones and distressed edges that mimic old worn and torn papers.  I decided to add a twist to that by using alot of color, while still using a vintage style with lots of layers, punches and lace.  I've chosen a photograph of my husband's parents taken in the mid 1940's, probably not too long after the end of WW II.  I printed the photo in a dark sepia tone to add to the vintage look.  The Prima Divine papers paired with My Mind's Eye and 7 Dots I Must Believe worked perfectly for me on our May kit BAP!

So, let's get started.  When I create, I usually get a rough idea of what papers I want to use and  shapes.  You can see a list of my supplies at the end of this BAP.

Step 1:  Cut an 8" circle from MME I'm With.  Note the tool I am using in the photo.  That is the coolest circle cutting tool on the market. It is made by Kreaxions and is the best circle cutter out there in my opinion.

 

Step 2:  Take a Martha Stewart corner punch and punch all the way around the circle.  This is a favorite technique of mine as it allows you to mimic a doily effect on any of your papers. (sorry for the slightly blurry image, I was doing this in our RV, not the best of circumstances for photographing!)  This is really easy to do, just turn your punch upside down so you can see what you are doing and punch around your circle.

 

 

 

Step 3:  Now let's tear a rectangle.  It is about 4" wide and 6.5" long at its longest point. 

 

 

Step 4:  Now I have gathered up some scraps to use as layers.  The scrap with the circle cut from its center is 10" wide and about 5" long and I used Martha Stewarts Wildflower punch on it.  You just want it long enough to hide under your other layers.

 

The wide strip is 12" x 4 5/8" and is punched on the bottom with EK Success Flower Burst and EK Success Painted Flower. 

 

I have also punched another border with EK Success Flower Burst.  It is in two pieces as I used scraps and those pieces will fit under the photo. 

 

The odd shaped scrap on the left is 5 3/4" x 6 7/8" and the rectangle piece is Prima packaging, about 4" x 3/4".

 

 

 Step 5:  Time to distress and  ink everything up.  I used a lot of different colors of ink on my pieces as I was aiming for a lot of color on this layout.  If you are trying to achieve a really vintage look, you will want to stick with "dirty" Distress colors  like Walnut Stain and Gathered Twigs.  Really, any of the browns or even black work great with vintage LOs.

 

 

Step 6:  Ok. now that you've distressed and inked, its time to start putting our LO together.    I've chosen the Couple page from the Divine collection  as my base paper.  The moment I saw this paper I knew that I wanted to scrap this particular photo with it. 

 

Lay the wildflower punched piece down first about an inch from the top of the page and centered side to side.  Then layer the odd shaped piece on top of that dropping it down about an inch from the top and  almost an inch from the left side.  Place the piece of Prima packaging near the bottom and 3" from the left side of the base page.

 

 

Step 7:  Now let's add our border strips. First place the wide border strip that is punched on the top and the bottom about 4 1/2" from the top.  Add the circle on top of that and then layer the other punched strips 5 3/4" from the top.

 

(Note, now is when you want to add in the two pieces of burlap you see in the finished LO.  For me, the burlap was one of the last things I did because  that was when I decided the LO needed it)

 

 

 

Step 8:  Now add the irregularly torn rectangle and some lace.  I used some venetian lace from my stash.

 

 

 

Step 9: I like to pop up my photos as it adds a bit of dimension to your layout and helps the photo to stand out.

 

 

 

Step 10:

 

Time for embellishments!  As often happens when I am creating, I get carried away and forget to photograph the last steps,  sorry!!  I think you can see what I have done though.

 

I popped up the Cherish title but in the end changed that out for one of the Prima chippies, you'll see  it on the finished LO.

 

 

 

To build the cluster:  First glue down the Prima vine that came in the kit.  Then tuck the chipboard piece up next to the vine.   Then take the largest of the Kaisercraft roses and place at the bottom of the vine, then a slightly smaller one in the center and finally one of the Prima rose buds near the top.  Place some of the Prima flat flowers under the vine and around the chippy. ( I sprayed these with Lindy's Glitz Spritz Blazing Sun to add some sparkle)  Now take sprigs of the Magnolia flower berries and tuck into the cluster.

 

Finally, I took a Prima zipper pull and placed it under the photo just because I thought it was cool, LOL!

 

 

 Tuck in the balloon chippy on the right between layers.  Add two of the Prima daisies that came in the kit on top of the lace.

 

 

 

 Step 11:  And finally I decided that a 5/16" border would look nice around the entire page.  Be sure to ink the border inside and out, I can see that although I inked the inside, I still need to ink the outside.  ( This border was left over from a punch with a WRMK Lucky 8 punch.  I always cut those out carefully so that I can save this border.)

Mojo Monday sketch from the Flying Unicorn!

Here's a great way to start off your Monday, use this great sketch designed by Alda, the Grand Unicorn herself!!  And of course, you simply must post your creation in the Mojo Monday thread so that we can all see it!

Here is my take on the sketch, I  flipped it from left to right.  I kept it kind of simple because I think the Prima Divine paper is so pretty, I just didn't want to cover it up!  The papers are from the May Flying Unicorn KOM.  As always it is a fabulous kit, full of scrappy goodies! I add the Prima flowers, berries and leaves from my stash; well actually,  they came from Jen's stash, LOL!! 

I added some texture by using Prima's Static mask, that mask is becoming a favorite of mine!!

Flying Unicorn Round Robin

We're having a Round Robin at the Flying Unicorn this month with 9 teams!  The competition is fierce and everyone is definitely bringing their A game!

I did this layout for my team to scraplift using Bo Bunny Prarie Chic.  I really love how this turned out!  You know Prarie Chic is not a paper that I would typically buy but I guess I was feeling like doing something different when I bought it and I have to say I love this collection!

I painted on some white gesso, most of which is coverd by the photo and matting, in the center and then added some masking with Prima's lattice stencil.  I dabbed on some Lindy's Edelweiss moss green and let that pool over and around the masked elements.  Then I cut some hexes to pop up where there are hex designs on the base paper. 

I used Dusty Attic 0544 Scroll frame that I painted white and then masked with TCW reverse chicken wire and inked the masking to bring out the detail.

I've got a fun little challenge for you.  Mother's Day is right around the corner and you just might need a fun little box to put a gift in for Mom.  My challenge is simply to alter a box in any way that you wish.   Doesn't have to be for Mom, can be for anyone!

I made the poppies on the box and I'd love to see you make some poppies too so I'm giving an extra entry to anyone who makes at least 2 of my poppies!  The poppies on this box were made with the smaller tattered flower.  See my tute here:   Poppy tute  Now I know that poppies might not go with the box you are altering so if they don't, you can still make the flowers for use on something else.

Here's some inspiration, a G45 box done with Graphic 45 French Country.  How I love this paper!!  Inside the box is a mini that I have yet to do, it'll be coming along soon!

And guess what, there are TWO RAKs to be one, whooo hooo!!  The first RAK is a gift certificate to the store, oh yeah baby, everyone wants that!!

And the second RAK is awesome too!!!  I'd be happy with either that's for sure!!

Here's a box I altered for a Christmas gift a few years ago.  This was a cardboard container that Viactiv came in. 

And here's a wooden box that I altered last year, this was the OTP in one of our kits.  I use this box to store my awesome Flying Unicorn adornments in.

And the OTP from this past January, a box that held a mini.

Graphic 45 French Country

Did you know that I collect chickens?  Can you just imagine how excited I was when G45 brought out French Country.  Well SWOON!!!  That is the most gorgeous paper!!

Somewhere in the depths of my closet are some rooster photos that I took years ago and I must find them and scrap them with French Country.  But I wasn't in the mood to dig thru a bunch of stuff the other day so I grabbed this photo of our very sweet black lab/german shepherd mix, Brandy.  She was the smartest dog I've ever had and of course, I miss her.  She went over the bridge December 28, 2007.

I think she looks quite nice on French Country!  On the right I masked some harlequin checks using TCW Mini Harlequin and Golden molding paste.  After they were dry I misted with Lindy's Winter Jasmine Gold. After that was dry, I touched with Prima Rusty Keys to add a little depth to the yellow.

I made the sunflowers using Spellbinders Blossom Two and Hearltfelt Creations Aztec Gold Sunflowers.  The centers of the flowers are microbeads.

Underneath the flowers I have put Kaisercraft laser cut wood heart flourishes embossed with Stampendous Aged green.  Oh that is a lovely color, got it from the Flying Unicorn, currently out of stock but on order so hopefully it will be back in the store soon!

The Prima tags included in the kit are AWESOME!!!  I love that they are extra long!  On this tag I was playing around with different colors of Lindy's mists using both sprays and dabbers.  I also masked with TCW's Mini Vine stencil.  I finished it off with FUL metal flower Adornments which I dabbled with gesso and paint, FUL flower Adornments, and fibers from my stash.

 

 

I used the Creative Medium in the Mixed Media kit on this tag to mask the mini cells and gathered twigs distress ink to mask the crackles in the background.  The dots were stamped using the foam stamps in the Mixed Media kit and Viva 3D Stamp Paint-carmine red from my stash.  Everything else except the lace and ribbon is from the kit.

 

I will show you the techniques that I used on this tag in a video May 9th where I make another similar tag from start to finish.

 

 

 

I love the vintageness of this tag!  The red tags and round tag are from the kit - Studio Calico DIY Epherma pack,  I added a piece of newsprint, the flowers and ribbons from my stash.
