January KOM - Carpe Diem, is now available!!

My mojo left town sometime in October and I've been searching for it frantically ever since!  Well I finally found it all wrapped up in the Flying Unicorn January KOM, Carpe Diem!  I love this kit, it is fun and playful and different from the papers I usually turn to.  It was just what I needed to get my creative thoughts flowing!  The kit features papers from the collections of BasicGrey Serenade, Pink Paislee Portfolio, and Fancy Pants Country Boutique.

The summer of 2010 my husband and I spent in Alaska which is my favorite place in the whole world!  On our way home we stopped in the tiny Alaskan town of Hyder to view bears at Fish Creek.  Hyder is completely surrounded by Canada and if you don't fly or boat in, the only way you can get there is by driving through Canada.  There the Forest Service operates the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site where one can stand on a platform overlooking the creek and observe black and brown bears fishing for salmon that are spawning.  It was just magical to be able to observe the bears in their own habitat so up close and personal!

The bear and tree silouettes and cheesecloth are from my stash as are the totem pole and Alaska stickers.  The letters are Thickers and are from a previous kit.  Everything else is from the January kit.

One of the fun things that came in this kit was a Tattered Angels mask and I just happened to have the stamp that goes with it so I have masked the flourish there under Fish Creek and then stamped and embossed inside the masking.  I used clear embossing powder which brings out the stamped image.

Journal:
August 2010 – Being “up close and personal” with this Mama Bear and her cub was so thrilling! She was teaching her cub to fish but poor little guy, the fish were nearly as big as he was and they kept getting away.  She even caught one and gave it to him but he couldn’t hold on to it.  She would spot a fish in the water, give chase, and if she caught it, she’d haul it out on shore they would feast on it together.  I think the cub was feeling playful and he smacked his Mom on the snout, oooohhh, that was not smart, she really bitched him out, growling and such!  I think he got a bear spanking!

On this next layout I did some  masking on the background using a Studio Calico hexagon mask that came in the kit.  I sprayed the background with Dylusions and sponged on some Viva Inka Gold (be sure to see my video on this product).  I added some Dusty Attic grass clusters that are colored with Lindys and gold Inka Gold.  The papers under the photo have been heavily inked with Mixed Media Inx to mimic the colors in the water.  I dabbed gesso on the Bo Bunny flowers in the corner so they would look similar to the flowers on the Prima vine.

Mojo Monday at the Flying Unicorn!

Every Monday the creative team posts a new Mojo MOnday sketch and an example LO done with the sketch.  Check it out here, it's a great place to find some inspiration.  Of course for Christmas we have a beautiful Christmas themed sketch that Alda designed.

Here's my take on the sketch,  I flipped it as that worked better for my photo and chosen embellishments.  I used G45's Nutcracker Sweet collection, available from the Flying Unicorn store.

I used WRMK's Lucky 8 Classic Wreath to make the large plaid  diecut amd then cut 3 circles and layered them in the center.  I used a Martha Stewart corner punch (deco fan) to cut around the largest circle.

I used my favorite product that I discovered this year, Stampendous embossing enamel  in aged hunter green on the Dusty Attic chippy below.  These enamels come in more than 13 colors and are just so perfect to use on chippys!!  Take a look at these enamels  in the store.  I know we are out of some colors but I bet they are on order!

The flowers are Prima poinsettieas from my stash, got them last year.  The trees are just some triangles that I cut from the Nutcracker Sweet collection.

Supplies:
Bazzill green cardstock
Patterned paper:   G45 Nutcracker Sweet collection:  plaid-Endearing sentiments; lg green sq-festive fairytale; red circle-Clara’s dream; outerborder-Nutcracker Sweet; dotted green-holiday magic; Nutcracker Sweet stickers

I hope you'll try this sketch and if you do, please post your creation in our Mojo Monday forum, we'd love to see it!

More fun with 13 @rts!

Oooh I haven't had this much fun in ages! 13 @rts, from Poland, is a new paper on the market and it is just awesome.  My last post I showed up a feminine girly page.  Today we're going deep into winter.  These papers are very versatile and a nice weight so that you can really apply the mixed media as I have done on this layout.  These papers are available now at the Flying Unicorn, here.

Here in the south we really don't get much snow at all and you know after 5 years in Alaska and 8 years in Denver, CO, I miss snow in the winter!  Every once in a blue moon as they say, we do get the occasional freak snowstorm and that was what happened Christmas 2010.  It started snowing Christmas night and we woke up 12" of snow on December 26th.

Nika was just an 8 month old puppy and being from Ocala, Florida, of course she had never seen snow before.  At first she was rather taken aback and looked at me like "what is that?".  But then with Chena by her side, she really immersed herself in the snow.  She and Chena chased each other all over the back yard leaping and jumping and really having a ball.  Of course I was out there with my camera trying to catch all the action.  This is a photo I got of Nika leaping through the snow.

I used a TCW mini mask and Golden fiber paste to create the snow splats.  Then I painted them with a snow cap dabber, topped and finally snow glitter.  I used an Alterations diecut fence th create my snow bank.  After cutting the fence I dabbed it with snowcap, then I took fiber paste and created the snow banks which I painted again with the snow cap dabber.  After that was dry, I painted it with Glitter snow and then sprinkled on some Diamond Dust for extra sparkle.  I added a few touches of icicle Stickles here and there.  The snowflakes were cut with a Martha Stewart punch and then covered with icicle Stickles.

These letters are foam that I coated with glue and then pressed into Diamond Dust.  Its a great way to give anything sparkle.  I also like to use it on flowers.

These leaves were cut with the ivy Cottage Cutz die and then I painted on Glitter Snow.  I helped it dry with my heat gun which caused the Glitter Snow to puff up a little bit and I think it looked more like snow as a result.

Supplies (highlighted products are linked to the Flying Unicorn store):
Letters:  Pink Paislee Meringue covered with Diamond Dust
Diecuts and punches: Martha Stewart snowflake punch; Alterations On the Fence;
Flowers:    Prima Fleur Danseur Swan Lake;
Stickles:  Icicles
Paint:     Ranger snow cap dabber
Other:  Diamond Dust; Glitter Snow; Golden Fiber Paste

The Flying Unicorn introduces 13 Arts!!

I got my package of 13 Arts in yesterday and immediately sat down and started creating!  This is a new paper line straight from Poland and are they ever lucious!!  The papers are a nice heavy weight with such rich blended colors.  This collection is The Frosted Life and I must admit that I started thinking something snowy.  But then I was drawn to the feminine soft blues and pinks and decided to work on another layout for the wedding album I am making our niece.

I love how the soft pastels make a muted background for the bride's vibrant bouquet, these papers are a perfect match!  I used a Martha Stewart punch on the background piece and mounted that on a piece of white cardstock that I had lightly inked around the edges with distress ink.  I also painted the background with watered down whie gesso as I wanted to further mute the pink.

I made the two flowers using the Alterations mini tattered floral die.  I used white cardstock to cut the flowers and then heavily misted them with Fireworks London Fog mist and then inked the flower tips with Distress Weathered Wood.  I scrunched the petals and twisted with my tweezers then layered one on top of the other and used a Prima Monarch Diamond flower center.

That beautiful swirl is a ScrapFX flourish and it is sooo gorgeous.  We just got a new shipment in of ScrapFX so you might want to check it out as it tends to fly out the door!

I am having a real love affair with Stampendous Embossing Enamels right now.  I am using them on everything!  I used Shabby Pink on the ScrapFX chippy above and below I used Shabby White.  The application of the shabby white was kind of fun.  I took a Prima mask and some jasmine Mixed Media Inx and inked over the mask.  Then I covered it with the white embossing enamel.  I think it made for an interesting effect.  You don't really see the masked image so much but I love the white and gold flakes as it adds to the sparkle of the layout and for me a wedding layout should sparkle and shine!

Bathtime for Chena featuring Gallivant from the Flying Unicorn Dec KOM

Having two standard poodles means I spend alot of time grooming.  They are such wonderful dogs but their hair does require alot of attention.  Bending over the bathtub giving them baths was really killing my back so Dick built a doggie bathtub for me from a RV bathtub and a sink base cabinet.  (There are doggie bathtubss available on the market but none that would fit into the space that I had available.)

In addition to Creative Imaginations Gallivant papers, flowers, Kasiercraft wooden frame, Fabscraps chipboard crown from the December KOM, I added from my stash all the black swirls and the Dusty Attic Bathtime chippy.  The black corner & circle swirls are a transparency and the white leaves I made with clay from I think it was the Oct kit.

The Bath Time chippy is embossed with Stampendous teal aged embossing enamel and snowcap dabber paint on the bubbles and then I added frosted lace stickles to give the bubbles some sparkle and dimension.  I love love love the Stampendous embossing enamels, they look so great on chipboard and easy to apply!  I just dab on Stampendous Boss Gloss and then cover with embossing enamel.  YOu can find these products at the Flying Unicorn here.  I have to say the enamels are my favorite product discovery this year!

Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it!

Flying Unicorn Dec KOM - the feminine side!

Yesterday I showed you the more masculine aspects of the fabulous December KOM and today I want to show you the feminine side.  I mixed Fabscraps Marie Antoinette and Ruby Rock-It Mother Nature on these three layouts.  Our niece got married in August and I am making her wedding album for her.  Her wedding colors were aqua and pink so these papers perfectly fit the bill!

The background paper on this layout is Fabscraps and I love the bride and church steeple peeking out on the right, isn't that perfect for a wedding LO!  I made the roses from a Fabscraps punch out page !  The birdcage was fussy cut from one of the Mother Nature papers.  I love this picture of the bride and her sister!

The flower girls were so so cute!  I think they were 3 and 5 years old.

One of my favorite products right now is Stampendous aged embossing powders and I've used it here on the Kaisercraft wooden frame.  I really love the look!

Sorry for the blurred out faces... this little girl was so cute clowning around while the photographer was trying to take a nice group shot, I concentrated on taking pictures of her while he was trying to get a nice group shot!  Again I've used Stampendous aged pink on the crown and the Dusty Attic flourishes.  That was a corner bracket that I cut up.

Be sure to stop by the Flying Unicorn store and check out the kit and addons.
