Stamperia Roses & Laces for The Frilly and Funkie Blog Challenge

Mother May I Challenge
Our new challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Blog is up and Suzz is hosting.  May in the U.S. is when we celebrate Mother's Day and honor our mothers. Suzz is challenging you to create something that is vintage or shabby chic which is inspired by your Mother or any mother figure in your life. It can be a favorite memory, something based on her style, something she said/says to you, or anything that reminds you of your mother figure. Make sure to share with us how your mother inspired your art!

My Take on the Challenge

My Mother is my inspiration for so many things, most importantly, how to live a good life.  She passed away September 21, 2018 at the age of 96 1/2.  This will be my first Mother's Day without her and I know it will be hard.  For the last 10 years I have hosted a big family meal with a menu of Mom's choosing.  I thank my Mother for so many things but most importantly for teaching me to be strong, independent, and honest.  And I really can't thank my Mom without also thanking my Dad as he was her partner for life (72 years!) and together they taught us how to live the good life, but always having compassion for fellow man.

I used Stamperia's Roses and Laces papers for my layout.  Have you taken a look at Stamperia papers?  They are stunning and different from so much that is on the market.  Really rich vintage colors and images. The Funkie Junkie Boutique carries an extensive line of Stamperia, be sure to stop by and take a look.

Eileen  Hull's new Molten Dimension Embossing Powders by Emerald Creek

Ya'll I love embossing powder and I have like a gazillion of them!  Eileen's are really special because they are so thick and dimensional.  AND they layer nicely too!

Take a look at the leafy vine.  First I dabbed embossing ink on the chipboard.  If it's a large piece like this one, I do half at a time as the embossing ink tends to soak into the chipboard if you don't first paint it...and I usually don't. Too lazy 😅!    

First coat of powder was Aqua Splash.  After that cooled, I dabbed a bit more embossing ink on, just in random spots, and then added a bit of White Wonder embossing powder.  I heat embossed that and while the melted powder was still hot I sprinkled on tiny bits of Golden Rod and Polished Silver.  I love the multi-color effect!

 The filigree piece beneath the flower and clock was a silver metal piece that I heat embossed the same way as the chipboard.  Doesn't it look so pretty?  A WORD OF CAUTION:  If you heat emboss metal, DO NOT touch for several minutes, the metal gets really really HOT!!

Just above the filigree piece I made a pocket to tuck tags into.  This is a really fun way to do some hidden journaling.

Embellishments:

On either side of the photo I used a die-cut made from silver foil paper and the Provincial Impresslits die.  The I lightly applied a little bit of embossing ink with a paint brush and sprinkled with Baked Velvet Aegean Sea.  I love how it fills in the impressions with color.

The flowers I used are Little Birdie Crafts.  You can't see it so much in the photo but these are really sparkly, sooooo pretty! 

I stenciled a bit on the background using a rosette stencil.  You can see it on the right corner above  and on the right corner below, under the flowers.  I rubbed Distress Oxide Iced Spruce over some of the stenciling to make it stand out.

New Products from Eileen Hull Designs and Therm- O-Web

New products!

Eileen has collaborated with Therm-O-Web to bring you some great products to use with her many Sizzix dies.  I used them all to make this travel journal which is special!  Now why is it special?  Well, I am getting ready to go on a 3 month RV trip with my husband and spoos to Alaska and this will be my "official" 2018 Alaska journal!

A little background...We lived in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1995 - 2000.  It is our most favorite place in the entire world.  We spent 6 weeks campground hosting at Denali National Park and that was a great adventure.  This trip we plan to travel around more, but who knows, we weren't planning to campground host in 2010 but just stumbled upon it!  If you are interested, I will be updating my Alaska Blog that I started in 2010,  Road Trip - Alaska Bound, with stories and photos from this trip.

A Tutorial

Step 1:

To make the journal I used Eileen's Journal Die by Sizzix and covered both sides of the covers with paper from Stamperia's Voyages Fantastiques collection.  If you haven't taken a look at Stamperia papers, you are missing out!  Their papers are just so gorgeous and vintage and fabulous!  The Funkie Junkie Boutique carries many of their lines, do stop and take a look.

One of Eileen's new products is the Easy-Cut Adhesive sheets by Therm-O-Web pictured below that are perfect for adhering paper to your die-cut journal cover.  If you haven't used this die before, this blog post goes through the steps for die-cutting and covering your journal cover with paper.  (I'll tell you about the diecut leaves in the center further down.)

 Step 2:
Next I stenciled on a Steampunk design using a Stamperia stencil and a couple of great Therm-O-Web products, Metallix Gold Gel masking paste and Pixie Spray which is a repositionable tack spray for stencils that works great!

Step 3:

Next I wanted to try Eileen's Foam Adhesive sheets.  These are just like the Easy Cut Adhesive sheets except that they are made of foam so they are great to use for giving your die-cuts some dimension.  I die-cut the intricate flourish you see in this picture and I love how it came out.  First I adhered the paper to the foam, added my die and ran it through my Vagabond several times to get a good cut.  (You can see the cut above on the Easy Cut Adhesive photo)  I inked up the die-cut to make it a bit darker and added two of these flourishes to my cover.

Step 4:

Nest I die-cut from the same foam sheet a travel word from Eileen's journaling words set.  This time I decided to try out Eileen's new Molten Dimensions Embossing Powders.  I used Golden Rod and I love how thick these embossing powders are!  

Step 5:

I made a simple closure with ribbon, a key hole and Velcro.  Simply loop a piece of ribbon through the key hole as picture and then adhere the two ribbons together.

Then add a velcro closure to the ribbon, press in place on the back cover and voilà, you have a neat simple closure.

Step 6:

To make these way cool flowers, I started with plain bronze flowers and "fancied" them up by applying Eileen's Molten Embossing Powder in silver and gold to the petals.  Isn't that just the coolest effect?  Just paint a bit of embossing ink on the petals, sprinkle with powder and heat.  CAUTION!!  Use tweezers to hold the flowers and DO NOT touch the metal until it cools after heating as it gets really hot.   

I painted a little embossing ink on these burlap flowers and added some embossing powder around the edges.  Love this look!

Step 7:

Now it's time to put the covers together.  I used another product from Eileen's new Therm-O-Web line, Red Liner Tape.  This tape is so great for Eileen's journals because it creates such a strong bond.  Some people don't like it because you can't tear it.  Well think about it, you can't tear it so it must be REALLY strong right?  I'm a convert!

Just place a line of tape all down the back cover and adhere the front cover.  Press in place and you're good to go!

That's it, my journal is all ready to go, now I just have the huge task of packing up the motorhome for a 3 month trip.  It's a lot of work let me tell ya!  It's so much easier to pack a suitcase and check into a hotel but it's not nearly as much fun!  I love sleeping in my own bed every night and most of all, having our much loved poodles with us!

 Tisha and Nika love RVing too and are keeping a close watch on the road!

One more little note of interest, Therm-O-Web sent us a nice box of goodies along with all the new Eileen products.  I have to say my favorite thing in the whole box might just be these little metal tips.
Wow, I just screwed one onto the Ultra Bond glue they sent and it makes the nicest thin glue line I've ever seen.  Fabulous glue and tip!!  Thank you Therm-O-Web!

Graphic 45 Love Notes Easel Card for Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog

I Love It Because...Challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Blog

This is a great challenge because you only have to do something that you love to do.  How easy is that?  Jenny Marples is our hostess this time and this is her description of the challenge: "How often do you create something just for you that makes your heart sing? Doesn't it feel great when you do! My challenge to you is to make a vintage or shabby chic piece of art, be it a journal page, a tag, a card, a home decor project etc, that fills you with happiness and makes you smile - don't forget to tell us why you love it so much."

My Take on the Challenge

My approach to this challenge was really quite simple, I just chose all the things I love and it became this gorgeous easel card.  First of all I was making this card for a special friend, that alone gave me impetus to create something special.  Then I chose all my favorite things: red, black and ivory Graphic 45 papers, beautiful Little Birdie blooms, chipboard, embossing powders and some pretty trim.  Of course this card is something I love!

I chose Graphic 45's Love Notes collection that was released in January to make this easel card. I love the drama of these colors and I think the woman silhouette really sets this card off quite nicely!

I think easel cards are especially nice because they display so prettily standing up as they do. 

The Chipboard

All the chipboard except the silhouette is from Creative Embellishments. I heat embossed the frame with Seth Apter's by Emerald Creek Baked Texture - Dirty Sand embossing powder. I love the multicolored look and textured feel of it. The words and silhouette were heat embossed with Seth Apter's by Emerald Creek Baked Velvet - Eclipse. The chipboard piece beneath the thank you words was inked with Distress Oxide Antique Linen Ink.

The Flowers

I used a mix of flowers from Little Birdie Crafts and Graphic 45.  The largest red rose and the buds are Graphic 45 and part of their Staples line.  I'm so happy to see G45 carrying coordinating flowers for their paper lines!  The rest of the flowers are Little Birdie Crafts and they are sooooo gorgeous.  The white ones are sparkly though that doesn't show to well in the photo.  

The Easel Mechanism

Easel cards are really easy to make,  Here's a link to a tutorial for an easel card.   They can be any size, this one is 7" x 6 1/4".  I used a simple strip that is popped up with foam tape to serve as a stop to hold the easel upright. That leaves plenty of room inside to write a personal message but still looks really pretty with the front of the card.  Take a second look at the first photo and you can see how it holds the easel in place.

The New Notebook Die

Eileen has done it again with this fun new Notebook Die!  What I love best about this die is that it makes the cutest little book that fits inside the Treasure Box.  

The books measure 3 3/4" x 5" and you can fit 3 of these inside the Treasure Box.

Inside the Books

Rather than making the typical signature booklets that are bound inside the Notebook with elastic bands, I decided to do things a little differently.

I cut papers and layered them together and adhered to the inner spine to make my inside.  I cut 3 pages from Graphic 45's Kaleidoscope Collection as follows:

7 1/2"  x 4 3/4"  score at 3 1/2" and 4".  This is the bottom page.
7 1/8" x 4 3/4", score at 3 3/8" and 3 3/4".  This is the middle page.
6 3/4" x 4 3/4", score at 3 1/4" and 3 1/2".  This is the top page.

After scoring, fold on the score lines and then turn over and apply scor-tape to the narrow scored section as in the photo below.  (The white strip is scor-tape)  I used 3/8", 1/4" and 1/8" scor-tape.

To assemble, adhere the 3/8" scored section of the middle page to the 1/2" scored section of the bottom page, centering.  Then, adhere the 1/4" scored section of the top page to the 3/8" scored section of the middle page, forming a booklet.

After assembling the pages, remove the 3/8" scor-tape from the back of the bottom piece and adhere to the inner spine of the notebook.  When completed it should look like this.  The pages fit nicely inside of each other.

The Treasure Box

Now that we've made 3 little books, it's time to make a Treasure Box to hold them.  I made this with Eileen Hull's Treasure Box Die by Sizzix that came out in January.

I used Graphic 45's Kaleidoscope collection and Little Birdie flowers.  I can't help myself, I have to put flowers on everything!

Making a Hinge for the Treasure Box

The Treasure Box die comes with two hinges and a handle but I wanted to make a different hinge system.    I cut a piece of Tim Holtz Substrate Sheet 4 3/4" x 2" and score lengthwise at 1".  Use the hinge to attach the lid to the body of the treasure chest.  I first glued the hinge to the body of the box and then folded the hinge over the edge of my table and attached to the lid.  I also used glue to adhere the lid so that I would have a little time to manipulate the lid and have it perfectly seated on the body of the chest.

Spring is in Full Bloom at The Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog.

I'm hosting the new challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog this time around. And guess what?  Yep, It's time to kick Old Man Winter out and extend a warn welcome to my favorite time of the year, Spring! Here in the south the trees and shrubs are all blooming and showing their splendor. Many are busy planting their vegetable gardens. The migrating birds have returned to build nests and raise a new family. Your challenge is to create a vintage or shabby chic project that illustrates the magic of spring in bloom!

My Take on the Challenge

I'm back to my layout roots.  If you follow my blog, you know that I like to get funkie with bright colors sometimes and I like to dabble in mixed media.  But really, what I love most of all is making a pretty layout with lots of flowers and a great photo and that's exactly what I've done to illustrate today's challenge.  The photo was taken out in the Caribbean somewhere while on a cruise with my best scrappy pals.

I've embossed my title word and the flourishes under the flowers with Seth Apter's Blizzard Baked Texture Embossing Powder.  I love the textured and multicolor look of Seth's Baked Textures!  The Funkie Junkie Boutique has a great selection of Seth's embossing powders too.

The word and flourishes are Creative Embellishments chipboard; they look so pretty peeking out from underneath my spring flowers.

These gorgeous blooms are from Little Birdie, and they are so exquisite, especially combined with Graphic 45's new release Bloom.  Bloom papers, Little Birdie flowers, what else would you need to make a delightful blooming spring layout?!

New Love Notes from Graphic 45

A New Collection to Love!

Oh my, Graphic 45 has done it again as their new Love Notes Collection has me swooning! This collection encompasses my favorite colors to work with, reds, pink, black, and ivory.  Perfection on the page, seriously!! With Valentine's Day just around the corner, this collection is a no brainer, it's perfect for the day. But even better, it's not limited to Valentines, it's a great collection for scrapping musical memories, weddings, (the blacks in the collection lend themselves easily to a masculine vibe), well, I think I could just about scrap any occasion with this collection!

Beauty in the Box

January is always exciting as its when designers get called to make show samples. Consequently, we get to see and use new products before they are released to the general public.  Now those are some fun secrets to keep!

I love to alter boxes (I am a self-admitted box hoarder, I have an entire closet devoted to empty boxes!) so I decided to alter a  kraft Staples Regular Book Box.  I fussy cut some elements from the design paper and popped them up with dimensional foam and used Graphic 45's new Staples Rose Bouquet flowers to give my cover lots of dimension and wow power!  Those roses are swoon worthy and are the perfect accompaniment for these papers!

Every good box should contain a great surprise, right?  Well then, this box does not disappoint as it holds a custom made mini album that perfectly fits in the box.

The Mini Album
The base mini is made from chipboard and black cardstock and has 7 pages, each of which is a pocket page with a pull out insert.  That gives you lots of room for photos and journaling.   I kept the cover fairly simple and not too dimensional so that it would fit nicely in the book box.

I used a closure that wraps to the back of the mini and has hidden magnets to hold it closed.

I've recorded a video flip through of the mini and box so that you can see each page.

Tip: I find it much easier to complete each page of the mini before placing on the hinge in the mini.
