Tag for the Guys for Creative Embellishments

I made this fun tag for my husband using a large tag from Creative Embellishments. At 5 1/2" x 10", they are the perfect size for most any project. He's a real grease monkey and loves nothing better than to play with old broken down cars and trucks. He really is quite talented as he is able to take a pile of "junk" and turn it into a street legal, street rod.

Ciao Bella's Start Your Engines paper collection is so perfect for doing projects for my hubby!  The background of the tag is a paper that looks like metal plating.  Then I added some black stenciling using CE's metal plate stencil.

I used two distressed checker pieces to go along with the racetrack checkered flags.  How did I get them so nicely black and white?  Easy, just paint the checker pieces with white paint and then glue to black paper.  Then trim off the excess black paper and you've got a black and white checkered piece.

Of course I had to include some rusty gears.  I used rust colored embossing powders to get the effect.

Had to add the old jalopy of course!  I used some gray and brown ink to dull the "black" of the paper.  After all, it's an old jalopy and the paint has long since faded!

You know I put flowers on everything so I added this rosette, I figured the hubby would not "see" it as a flower.

"It's Halloween" Challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique

The Challenge

Sara Emily is hosting the latest challenge at The Funkie Junkie Blog and it's all about Halloween.  She says, "I love Halloween! With Halloween just a few weeks away, I challenge you to create a vintage or shabby chic project with a Halloween theme. Your project can be as silly or creepy as you like, but just have fun!"

A Spooky but Frilly Tombstone

 I love the Etcetera tags and the Tombstone line of Etcetera tags are just so so fun for Halloween!  I used the mini size tombstone tag but they come in several sizes from large to small. 

First I applied a coat of off-white paint to all the pieces of the tag.  Next I stenciled bricks onto the top piece of the tombstone.  

 I finished the rest of the panels with crackle paste.  I inked over the cracks with Distress Ink in Vintage Photo to bring out the detail in the cracks.

After all the paint and mixed media dried, I added a panel of Worn Wallpaper to the center and then assembled  the tombstone.  Then the fun part began, adding the embellishments. I used some cheesecloth that I colored with a little black mist and stretched that out to resemble spider webbing.  The skeleton is chipboard from Creative Embellishments and it is heat embossed with Weathered White embossing powder.   The metal accents are Tim Holtz pieces from his Halloween Adornments.  I misted the roses (from I Am Roses)  with silver mist to bring out the petal detail.  The spiders are die-cut and heat embossed with black embossing powder.

Pass the Tissue Challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog

Challenge Theme

We're kicking off a new challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog today.  The challenge is  Pass the Tissues, Please! hosted by Sara Emily.  She describes the challenge this way, "Since we are still in 'cold season', I always make sure I'm stocked up on tissues in my home, in my purse and in the car. For this theme, I would like to see how you incorporate tissue paper into your vintage or shabby chic project. You can use regular tissues, tissue wrapping paper, sewing patterns or even collage paper or tissue wrap designed especially for crafting."

My Take on the Challenge

I made an all-purpose card combining Graphic 45's new collection, Love Notes, with Tim Holtz 's Botanical Collage Paper.  I love how it turned out, I think it has an oriental flair.

Methodology

To meet the challenge requirement of using tissue, I adhered a layer of collage paper to a piece of cream cardstock.  Then I embossed that using the 3D Kaleidoscope embossing folder.  I love the texture created when using the 3D folders.  To make the embossed details stand out, I lightly inked over the embossing with Distress Oxide Ink in Antique Linen.

Next I added red and black strip of papers from the Love Notes collection and topped that with a strip that I cut off from the embossed cardstock above and flipped it to the backside.  I made a card 4.25 x 7.5" from black cardstock and adhered the embossed panel to the front.

A Closer Look at the Card, inside and out

Time for the fun part now!  I added a small cut-apart from the Love Notes Collection and some lucious Graphic 45 roses to complete the front of my card.

Inside, I added a cream cardstock panel, embellished with a cut-apart and a paper strip, again from the Love Notes collection. 

The Flowers

Let's take a closer look at these gorgeous roses!  I die-cut some leaves to nestle underneath the roses.  Don't you love those sweet rosebuds peeking out?  

These dark red roses are a perfect match with Love Notes and add the perfect finishing touch to any project.  You know me, I am a flower child!  😄

A Challenge for the New Year!

Happy New Year friends!  I hope your holidays were filled with laughter and love amongst family and friends.

Cec has a great challenge for you to get the year started at The Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog.  This one will surely get you thinking and I hope you'll take the opportunity to explore a new tutorial and learn a new technique.

Here's Cec's challenge for you:  "I don't have access to quality craft classes locally so I spend time online to learn new things. For this challenge I want you to create a vintage or shabby chic project inspired by or using a technique or tutorial that you have found online. You must provide a link to the site that is inspiring your creation and please do not make a direct copy of anything you found."

My Take on the Challenge

I admit it, I am addicted to tags, specifically Tim Holtz's Etcetera tags.  I used the small size, that isn't all that small at 5.5" x 10", as my tag base.  The first thing I did was cover the tag with a layer of Botanical tissue.  I used Stamperia Glue but any gel or even clear gesso works great for this type of  application.

My Inspiration

Fellow DT member, Jenny Marples always inspires me with her beautiful work that is always chock full of techniques!  I recently bought some 3D Impresslits Tim Holtz dies and wanted to give them a go.  I wandered over to Jenny's blog, Pushing the Right Buttons, and found her Layered Distress Paint Embossing technique and tutorial.  I used this technique on both the tan layer and the blue scalloped trim on this tag.

I started with a tan piece of cardstock.  First I applied paint to the flat side of the Kaleidoscope 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder, just like Jenny did in her tutorial.  I ran it through my Vagabond.  Then I decided to add some Viva Pearl Modeling Cream because I liked it's irridecent appearance.  I used a brayer to apply the cream so that it would only color the raised portion of the embossed paper.

I followed the same technique for the blue scalloped pieces.  Well then, since this tag is a New Year's tag, I thought some glitz was in order so I brayered on some Bo Bunny Sugar Glitter Paste.  I quite loved how it looked at that point!

Before adding the paper layers to the tag,  I used Tim Holtz's Burst stencil to mask on the burst effect on the right side.  Then I added my paper layers cutting the border to fit around the tan layer.

Then it was just a matter of embellishing with pretty flowers, greenery, a typed token, and lots of metal pine cone charms.

How since it is winter, I thought my tag needed a chill factor so I misted with an opaque white.  I love the snowy look that created.  Then I used a dry brush to add some "snow" to the flowers and the Happy New Year sentiment.

 I used a mix of pine cones, the singles are Tim Holtz and the clusters are charms from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Of course, every tag needs a pretty bow!  I backed my bow with a piece of lace, i love how that looks!

Creating Texture with 3D Embossing Folders

Challenge:

The Funkie Junkie Boutique hosts the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog and it's time for a new challenge.  Sara Emily is hosting this time around and the challenge theme is "Impress Us".  Get out your embossing folders or anything you have and create a shabby chic or vintage project that has an impression.

My Challenge Creation:

I made a spooky Halloween easel card for the challenge.   Yep, I do make a lot of easel cards.  Why you ask?  Because they look so great standing up by themselves!

The Process:

I used a 3D Tim Holtz 3D Texture Fades Impressions embossing folder for the "impressions" part of the challenge.  I simply placed a piece of black cardstock in my embossing folder and ran it through my Vagabond.  Now to make all the wonderful impressions stand out, I lightly rubbed the surface of the cardstock with Prima Mettalique wax.  I love how that completely changed the appearance and brought out all the impressions highlights.

Next, I grabbed a few Tim Halloween stamps, stamp platform, his Halloween 8 x 8 paper stash and some pumpkin colored cardstock.  I stamped the poison bottle onto patterned paper from the Halloween stack and  trimmed it to a nice rectangular shape and adhered it to the front of the card.   I ALWAYS use the stamp platform to stamp because I am "stamping" challenged.  I love that I can stamp over my image several times using the stamp platform and I did just that, to get a nice dark crisp image of the poison bottle.

Then I stamped the pumpkins using embossing ink onto orange cardstock and used my favorite new embossing powder, Seth Apter's Oil Rubbed Bronze by Emerald Creek, for the pumpkin faces.  It's such a nice shimmery dark color with little flecks of copper.  I fussy cut the pumpkins and popped them on the front, added a black flower and a gingham bow.  One thing I love to do with black flowers is mist them with silver or gold mist.  I used Lindy's Black Orchid Silver to dress up this flower.  It give the otherwise inky black petals some definition.

Inside the card, I cut a piece of patterned paper and stenciled some paint drips on it and adhered this to my black cardstock base.  Then I used a really cool spider web acetate overlay that is part of the Halloween Paper Stack. To finish it off, I added a die-cut Happy Halloween sentiment cut from black cardstock and again rubbed lightly with silver wax.  I popped up the two witches and they serve to hold the easel in place.  Oh yes, one final embellishment:  a creepy spider charm crawling around.  Ugh, I hate spiders!!!
