Eileen Hull's September Sizzix Release

I love Eileen Hull's new release!  It includes a gorgeous A5 3-D embossing folder, Lacy Leaves, 2 Thinlits Sets, Windowsill Flowers and Vase and Home Sweet Home, and a Framelits Set, Tunnel Arches.

I used the Arches and Windowsill sets  along with the embossing folder to make this fun Halloween decoration.

The Home Sweet Home set includes 24 pieces just right for designing your own woodlands scene.  I used the deer and trees dies to embellish this layout.  

I really love this new Lacy Leave embossing folder.  I used it to cut arches for both of these cards.

Eileen Hull's New House Ornament Die by Sizzix

Hi friends!  Today I want to  show you another way to use Eileen Hull Designs new House Ornament Die by Sizzix.  This die has so many uses besides being an ornament.  I've used it to make spooky Halloween treat boxes.  Aren't they just the cutest?  They are filled with chocolates and a surprise for my scrappy bff's!  (Hmm, wonder how many of my bff's will see this blog post?!)

Tutorial:

These are really quick and easy to make, especially if you make them from design paper rather than mat board that is paper covered, painted, stamped and/or inked.  I selected some fun Halloween 

12 x 12 papers and cut in half so that the paper was 6" x 12".  Then I just ran the paper through my die cutting machine (I have a Vagabond).  The trick to using paper with these dies is to use a crease pad in place of one cutting pad.  If you use the regular sandwich like when you are cutting a mat board design, more than likely the paper will cut through where the creases should be.  Using the crease pad will cut the paper and add crease lines where they should be!

You need to cut two pieces with the House Ornament die, then apply Eileen's Red Liner Tape to the small flaps on the left.  Join the two pieces together as shown in the 2nd photo below.

Then fold into a box shape with the other tab inside the box, press to secure the tape to the house side wall.  You have two flaps on the bottom, cut one off and secure the other with the tab inside the box.

Next, let's give those windows some definition 'cause they are not so visible.  Eileen's House/Pocket Stitchlits just happens to have a window frame that fits these windows perfectly.  Cut two window frames and adhere to the outside over the window cutouts.  I love how Eileen's dies work together!

That's all there is for the basic assembly of the box.  BUT now we have to gussy it up!  Add some flowers and ribbons at the top.  On the sides you can add stickers or whatever you like. 

The House Ornament die also cuts a small house so I used that to create a door. I just cut the top off to take off the point, you can see my door on the house below on the right.

I also wanted to add some tags to my boxes. so I used the adorable little house that comes with this die to make a cute little tag.  AND because in my world, more is better,  I added a small circle tag that I cut with Eileen's Credit Card Sleeve and Tags die set.

Creating Texture with 3D Embossing Folders

Challenge:

The Funkie Junkie Boutique hosts the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog and it's time for a new challenge.  Sara Emily is hosting this time around and the challenge theme is "Impress Us".  Get out your embossing folders or anything you have and create a shabby chic or vintage project that has an impression.

My Challenge Creation:

I made a spooky Halloween easel card for the challenge.   Yep, I do make a lot of easel cards.  Why you ask?  Because they look so great standing up by themselves!

The Process:

I used a 3D Tim Holtz 3D Texture Fades Impressions embossing folder for the "impressions" part of the challenge.  I simply placed a piece of black cardstock in my embossing folder and ran it through my Vagabond.  Now to make all the wonderful impressions stand out, I lightly rubbed the surface of the cardstock with Prima Mettalique wax.  I love how that completely changed the appearance and brought out all the impressions highlights.

Next, I grabbed a few Tim Halloween stamps, stamp platform, his Halloween 8 x 8 paper stash and some pumpkin colored cardstock.  I stamped the poison bottle onto patterned paper from the Halloween stack and  trimmed it to a nice rectangular shape and adhered it to the front of the card.   I ALWAYS use the stamp platform to stamp because I am "stamping" challenged.  I love that I can stamp over my image several times using the stamp platform and I did just that, to get a nice dark crisp image of the poison bottle.

Then I stamped the pumpkins using embossing ink onto orange cardstock and used my favorite new embossing powder, Seth Apter's Oil Rubbed Bronze by Emerald Creek, for the pumpkin faces.  It's such a nice shimmery dark color with little flecks of copper.  I fussy cut the pumpkins and popped them on the front, added a black flower and a gingham bow.  One thing I love to do with black flowers is mist them with silver or gold mist.  I used Lindy's Black Orchid Silver to dress up this flower.  It give the otherwise inky black petals some definition.

Inside the card, I cut a piece of patterned paper and stenciled some paint drips on it and adhered this to my black cardstock base.  Then I used a really cool spider web acetate overlay that is part of the Halloween Paper Stack. To finish it off, I added a die-cut Happy Halloween sentiment cut from black cardstock and again rubbed lightly with silver wax.  I popped up the two witches and they serve to hold the easel in place.  Oh yes, one final embellishment:  a creepy spider charm crawling around.  Ugh, I hate spiders!!!

Candy Box for the Frilly and Funkie Haunted Halloween Challenge!

The Haunted Halloween Challenge

It's time for a new challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog.  Jenny is hosting this fun challenge and she says, "It's time to get your freak on and go all out for Halloween. We want to see your ghouls and ghosts and things that go bump in the night. It's going to be spooktacular!!!" All you need to do is create a shabby chic or vintage project that goes along with the theme, Haunted Halloween.

I've altered a Graphic 45 book box for this challenge using the fabulous Hallowe'en in Wonderland Deluxe Collector's Edition (DCE) from Graphic 45.  You can find this collection at the Funkie Junkie Boutique along with lots of other spooky things for Halloween projects!

The Process

To create the box, I first covered the entire box with paper, inside and out.  For the lid, I layered a couple of black/crem patterned papers and then did some stenciling with a Tim Holtz mini stencil and Prima Art Alchemy wax.  Then I added a die-cut "Happy Halloween" and a chipboard piece from the Halloween in Wonderland DCE.  The DCE's are great because they contain not on the papers from a collection, but also a sticker sheet and chipboard pieces.

I like to nestle little objects into my floral clusters like the Tim Holtz pumpkin there. Charms are great for nestling and dangling from clusters.  The Funkie Junkie Boutique has a great selection of charms and metal pieces.  I've used two on this box, a flying witch and a creepy spider.  The flying witch I used is large enough to use as a lift for the box lid.

Don't you just love that creepy spider crawling out from the floral cluster?  

It is really frustrating when you can't find ribbon the right color to go with you project.  Well I solved that problem by buying white seam binding and dying my own.  Here's a great tip from my friend Heather Thompson that makes dying ribbon a bit less messy.  Put your ribbon in a plastic sandwich bag, spray a little water and colored mist into the bag, and then "mush it around" 'til he ribbon is dyed the color you want.  Add more mist for deeper color.

The box is filled with my favorite chocolates!
