March Madness Challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Blog

Challenge Theme

Time for a new challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Blog and this one is so fun!  It's all about March Madness ans Suzz is our hostess!  She says, "Don't be afraid, the challenge isn't going to require you to use basketball inspired images. Instead I want you to be inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I started from this quote of a conversation between the Mad Hatter and Alice: The Mad Hatter asks Alice: "Have I gone Mad?" and Alice replies "I am afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are." The challenge is to take any idea or concept from this wonderful tale to inspire your project. There are so many wonderful bits or pieces to be inspired by like the Queen of Hearts, the mad hatter, the looking glass, tea party or Alice herself. The possibilities are endless. Anything can be your inspiration but make sure you reference what inspired your art from the story!"

My Take on the Challenge

My inspiration is simply the Mad Hatter, oh how I love to make hats and so I crafted this funky far-out hat for the Mad Hatter to wear.  I used Stamperia's new collection, Alice, to make this colorful hat.  Now isn't that just the perfect collection for this project!!  You can find it at The Funkie Junkie Boutique but better hurry, because, Stamperia papers sell out pretty quick.

The Flowers

I made the largest flowers on this hat using one of my favorite flower dies, Sizzix Alterations Tattered Florals.  I just love these pretty flowers!

I made two of them, and then I added some of Graphic 45's gorgeous lush Triumphant Red Roses.  They come in a  pack complete with rosebuds, leaves and spirally thingys!   (Thingys, that's a technical term, 😃)

Take a look at the White Rabbit charm dangling, isn't that just the cutest!  The Funkie Junkie Boutique has them in packs of 6.  I imagined that the Mad Hatter needed some scissors so I have a pair of those dangling from this mad hat too.

Every seamstress needs buttons so there are a couple of those nestled in there too.

One more view of the White Rabbit, I think he's heralding the handmade flowers!  😉  I misted them with Lindy's to give them lots of sparkle.

Interactive Card Tutorial for the Haberdashery Challenge at the Frillie and Funkie Blog

The Challenge

We have a fun new challenge up today at the Frillie and Funkie Blog hosted by Zoe.  The challenge is to create a a vintage or shabby chic project including items found at a Haberdashery.  A haberdasher is a person who sells small articles for sewing, such as buttons, ribbons and zippers.  So dig into your notions and find something fun for this challenge.


My Take on the Challenge

I was ready for this challenge as The Funkie Junkie Boutique has the perfect paper, Stamperia's Atelier, and I couldn't wait to use it!  Atelier is a beautiful vintage paper collection that shows images that a seamstress or haberdasher might have on hand.  So or is that sew, 😃 I made a card folio that is full of flip pages and pockets.  I made on pocket large enough that small gifts like sewing notions could be tucked inside.  It's the perfect card for the seamstress.

On the left side I used some pretty Venise lace from The Funkie Junkie.    I used a silver tone filigree piece over the lace to serve as a backdrop fro my flower cluster. I changed the appearance of the filigree piece by first brushing it with vintage ivory Artisan Powder and then rubbed it with Mettalique wax in vintage gold.

Those scissors, I love those scissors! They are little bronze charms from the shop that are so cute!

Photos

Each side of the card has a pocket that holds a ribboned tag.  You can tie the ribbons together to create a closure for the card.  Before you open the card, you can flip the front up.  This is a great place to write a message and tuck in a photo.  I used Graphic 45's square tags and their square tag dies to cut papers to cover the tags.  The tag dies cut a perfect tag to fit over the tag and leaves a tiny border.

Then, open up the card and you'll see that the left side folds out.  On the right, you'll find a deep pocket that will hold little gifts and a tag pocket and again, that adorable scissors charm!  Ialso added a pretty carved coconut shell button.  

View of left side flipped out which reveals a fun little ATC tag tucked into a pocket.  The center panel has a gift or credit card pocket.  I used white seam binding to tie all my bows.

Let's take a closer look at that gift card pocket!  It's diecut with a Sizzix die from Eileen Hull Designs.  I love that little die!

This photo shows the front of the card flipped up from the card inside.

The butterfly tag on the left also flips over and has a magnet closure.

All the flaps opened up.  I know, it's a little confusing, best to take a look at the video.

 There are 3 nice sized pockets that hold  Graphic 45 square tags.  I used the square die to cut the design paper.  I love how the die cuts the paper such that a tiny border is left all around the tag.

Mojo Monday Sketch at the Flying Unicorn

Every Monday we have a new sketch  up at the Flying Unicorn.  Alda did today's sketch and as always, its a beauty!  The Flying Unicorn invites you to use our sketch anywhere but we'd love to see what you do with it.

I used the January KOM and a few things from my stash to interprete the sketch.  I love the Jodie Lee art journal papers that are included in the kit.  They are so perfect for mixed media applications and I've used plenty on this layout.  I used the mask and masking paste from the kit as well as the Lindy's mists and some paint too.    From my stash, I used Viva Maya paint  in olive was used to paint the roman numerals and dabble on the Flying Unicorn flower adornments.

We have some fun challenges running this month and I also did this layout for our January One Little Word challenge.  My word is Change and I've illustrated that with a photo I took at the Bay of Fundy in Canada where the tide changes some 55 feet every cycle.  This photo was taken at low tide, and where the people are standing in the photo would be completely covered with water well over their heads at high tide.  

Then I included a photo of myself and a subword, control, to indicate that I have control of my life and it is up to me to make a change in my life.

Marion Smith Designs and Leaky Shed Studios

I'm hosting a fun challenge at the Flying Unicorn this month, all you have to do is a layout, card, or tag and use pop dots, cardboard, foam, etc to pop up at least 3 different things including one layer!  Easy peasy, and loads of fun.  You could win a fabulous RAK too.  Our challenge winners are chosen by random selection so everyone has an equal chance!

I've used Marion Smith Designs new Garment District papers for this layout and a bit of Mad Tea Party too.  I am so excited to see Marion designing on her own and I have loved every single sheet in the 3 collections she has released.

The beautiful birdcage is a Leaky Shed Designs that I've covered with Stampendous aged ivory embossing powder.  I love the look these powders give to chipboard!

In the next two photos you can see how I've popped up the layers.  I used a thick cardboard box on the first layer and much thinner cardboard on the next layers.  Cardboard is great for popping up your layers as you don't have to worry about sag or using so much foam tape.

My Card/Tag challenge at the Flying Unicorn

Here's another tag with a Leaky Shed Studio Julie Nuttig chipboard doll.  These dolls are just so cute, I love putting them on tags.  This started out as a mixed media tag, as you can see on the background,  but I ended up covering most of that. LOL, that often happens to me. I This is 4" Princess and I painted her dress with Perfect Pearls gold and the ruffle is Luminarte pink cloud.
