Spotlight on Stamperia's Garden Collection

Join me over at The Frilly and Funkie Blog for the  Saturday Spotlight!  Today the spotlight is shining on Stamperia's Garden collection, AND I've got a great tutorial for you.  These papers are colorful and filled with delightful garden images that just might entice you to do a little fussy cutting.  I've created a garden journal that is simple to make, but oh so lovely, and, since it's the time of year for gift giving, this journal is perfect for the gardener's in your life!

Thankful Canvas for the Frilly and Funkie Challenge

Challenge Theme: 

Kathy is hosting our challenge this time and it's A Harvest of Gratitude.  Kathy asks that you

"create a vintage or shabby chic project that portrays something that fills your heart with thanksgiving. Use harvest colors and be sure to tell us how your project reflects your thankful heart."

My Project:

Sometimes life is hard, I mean really hard.  Right now, my family is having to deal with a lot of stressful issues.  We just lost our Mother and another family member is dealing with a difficult health problems.  Some days I find it difficult to think positively but this challenge has reminded me that I still have much to be thankful for and so I created this canvas as a constant reminder, life IS good, even in the face of adversity.

The Process:

Have I told you how much I LOVE everything Stamperia?  Oh my, they have the most gorgeous papers, totally drool worthy!!  The papers are so pretty, well, you could just frame the papers as they are with no modification!  For this project, I used the Patchwork collection and a rice paper sheet, also from the Patchwork collection.

Ok, I did add a few things to the papers.  I started with a 9" x 12" canvas and I first glued a 9" x 12" piece of design paper to that. I used a Tim Holtz circle mask and aged mahogany paint to stencil on some random circles.  Then I used a sponge stamp to add some smaller dots of Fossilized Amber and Aged Mahogany.

Then I took a 4" square canvas and painted it with Aged Mahogany paint.  After that dried, I decoupaged on a 4" square cut-apart and glued it to the canvas.  The raised canvas creates a picture with in a picture, giving the small canvas a position of importance. I am so grateful for my home, it is my refuge so I thought it was important to represent that on my canvas.

Though I'm not a coffee or tea drinker, I still love these cups and the messages they convey.  I fussy cut the teacups from the rice paper they were printed on and decoupaged them on the canvas.  I love their translucent look.

Beneath the cups I've added a  chipboard word that says it all, "family".  Family is everything to me.  The two words I've used on this canvas are Creative Embellishments chipboard and I like how they stand out.  I colored the words with Seth Apter's Oil Rubbed Bronze embossing enamel by Emerald Creek.  I like how the dark color gives the words a sense of importance.

I love the copper flecks in the embossed words.

Everyone faces challenges in life, I have to remember, that in spite of it all, life IS good.  I created a lot of texture on this tiny canvas that is just 3" square. I did some masking on the canvas with a burlap stencil and then painted it all with Aged Mahogany paint.

 Flowers
In my crafting world, it's all about the flowers.  Can't help myself, I have to put flowers on everything!  The flowers I've used on this canvas are mostly from Little Birdie's Vivid collection of blooms.  Love the vibrant color that works so well with this canvas!

Creating Texture with 3D Embossing Folders

Challenge:

The Funkie Junkie Boutique hosts the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog and it's time for a new challenge.  Sara Emily is hosting this time around and the challenge theme is "Impress Us".  Get out your embossing folders or anything you have and create a shabby chic or vintage project that has an impression.

My Challenge Creation:

I made a spooky Halloween easel card for the challenge.   Yep, I do make a lot of easel cards.  Why you ask?  Because they look so great standing up by themselves!

The Process:

I used a 3D Tim Holtz 3D Texture Fades Impressions embossing folder for the "impressions" part of the challenge.  I simply placed a piece of black cardstock in my embossing folder and ran it through my Vagabond.  Now to make all the wonderful impressions stand out, I lightly rubbed the surface of the cardstock with Prima Mettalique wax.  I love how that completely changed the appearance and brought out all the impressions highlights.

Next, I grabbed a few Tim Halloween stamps, stamp platform, his Halloween 8 x 8 paper stash and some pumpkin colored cardstock.  I stamped the poison bottle onto patterned paper from the Halloween stack and  trimmed it to a nice rectangular shape and adhered it to the front of the card.   I ALWAYS use the stamp platform to stamp because I am "stamping" challenged.  I love that I can stamp over my image several times using the stamp platform and I did just that, to get a nice dark crisp image of the poison bottle.

Then I stamped the pumpkins using embossing ink onto orange cardstock and used my favorite new embossing powder, Seth Apter's Oil Rubbed Bronze by Emerald Creek, for the pumpkin faces.  It's such a nice shimmery dark color with little flecks of copper.  I fussy cut the pumpkins and popped them on the front, added a black flower and a gingham bow.  One thing I love to do with black flowers is mist them with silver or gold mist.  I used Lindy's Black Orchid Silver to dress up this flower.  It give the otherwise inky black petals some definition.

Inside the card, I cut a piece of patterned paper and stenciled some paint drips on it and adhered this to my black cardstock base.  Then I used a really cool spider web acetate overlay that is part of the Halloween Paper Stack. To finish it off, I added a die-cut Happy Halloween sentiment cut from black cardstock and again rubbed lightly with silver wax.  I popped up the two witches and they serve to hold the easel in place.  Oh yes, one final embellishment:  a creepy spider charm crawling around.  Ugh, I hate spiders!!!

Halloween Greetings from Eileen Hull Designs

Let's Have a Halloween Party!

This banner is the perfect accessory for a Halloween bash and would look great hanging over a bubbling cauldron of punch.  (Lots of information on how to make a bubbling cauldron, just google it!)  Or on your front door, or anywhere else in your house!!  Here' s another creepy idea:  If you have a dark hallway for your guests to walk down, hang sewing threads from the ceiling, it feels like you're walking through spider webs, yuck!!

Let's Put it Together

I've used Authentique's Nightfall collection to make this banner.  It has such a great mix of Halloween colors and stickers.  The Beware banner on my large banner is from the collection's sticker sheet.

 I used two Eileen Hull Designs by Sizzix dies to make the banner.  The panels with the black widow and the witch were made with the Trinket Box & Frame die.  You only need cut the frame for the front of the box and then place a cut-apart behind the frame for these panels.  Easy peasy and its really a perfect size for banner making.  (Here's a link to see the "traditional" trinket box: trinket box link.)

Use the House/Pocket Stitchlits die set to make  the 3 pointed banner panels.  Use the largest die to cut these panels from black cardstock.  

Then cut 3 panels with the stitching holes from patterned paper. Carefully cut through the holes to have a postage stamp effect.  On the left side above, you can see where I haven't cut through the holes yet.

Next I used 3" foam letter stamps to stamp BOO onto the patterned paper.  I stamped with embossing ink so that I could use Emerald Creek's awesome Oiled Rubbed Bronze embossing powder.  It's a great dark color, almost black but just enough rust color to be super cool!  

Flowers & Leaves

I mixed handmade flowers in with commercial flowers.  The  Flowers & Leaves dies in the Journaling Cards set make flowers that are small enough to use on cards, tags and such.  The die for the flowers has several different sized flowers so I just diecut a "bunch" from patterened paper, shaped them with a stylus, and layered them up.  Then I diecut leaves from black print paper using the same die set and tucked the leaves under the flowers.
