7 Dots Messy Head & 9th Wave now available at the Flying Unicorn!

We are so excited that the two new collections from 7 Dots, 9th Wave and Messy Head, are in the store!  I've created two layouts from these incredibly gorgeous papers to share with you.
9th wave was perfect to use for this layout of my great niece playing in the pool.  9th Wave captures all the beautiful colors of the sea!  I added some Lindy's Fusible Webbing on the right.  I love the ragged lacey look of this webbing and I thought it added to the frothy sea look of the papers.  These papers are so pretty, I kept the embellishments and layering to a minimum as I wanted the beauty of the papers to really stand out.




You can see the details of the Fusible Webbing good in this photo.

At the bottom you can see an embellishment I created with duct tape!  Simply take a piece of duct tape and adhere to cardstock.  Then use an embossing folder to emboss the tape.  Next I painted the tape with white gesso, then I painted it with different shades of Viva Décor 3-D Stamp Paint.  It's easy and makes a cool looking embellie.  Trying using metallic paints for a really rich look!

This is one of our beautiful granddaughters.  She came and stayed with us for a week and we had a great time scrapping together.  On this day shedonned this fun hat and we took some fun photos.

I mixed 9th Wave and Messy Head on this layout and used Prima's Flourish mask and Lindy's Alpine Ice Rose mist on the Messy Head paper to add some bright color.

More kit creations from the Flying Unicorn!

The May Flying Unicorn kit, Coffee and Muse, includes not only papers from  Prima Divine, but also7 Dots Love is in the Air and My Mind's Eye Collectable collections.  On this layout I've used all 3 collections as they worked so well together.  I love the WRMK Lucky 8 punches and I used Lace Kerchief on this layout to make two diecut papers.  I used  Dusty Attic 0606 Garden Frame, I thought it was perfect for this cute picture of my niece and her bride's maids.

The Prima tags included in the kit are AWESOME!!!  I love that they are extra long!  On this tag I was playing around with different colors of Lindy's mists using both sprays and dabbers.  I also masked with TCW's Mini Vine stencil.  I finished it off with FUL metal flower Adornments which I dabbled with gesso and paint, FUL flower Adornments, and fibers from my stash.

 

 

I used the Creative Medium in the Mixed Media kit on this tag to mask the mini cells and gathered twigs distress ink to mask the crackles in the background.  The dots were stamped using the foam stamps in the Mixed Media kit and Viva 3D Stamp Paint-carmine red from my stash.  Everything else except the lace and ribbon is from the kit.

 

I will show you the techniques that I used on this tag in a video May 9th where I make another similar tag from start to finish.

 

 

 

I love the vintageness of this tag!  The red tags and round tag are from the kit - Studio Calico DIY Epherma pack,  I added a piece of newsprint, the flowers and ribbons from my stash.

 

 

 

Template for a mad hat!

We're having so much fun this month at the Flying Unicorn doing projects inspired by the wonderful world of fairytales and such!  This week I've chosen Alice in Wonderland as my inspiration and who else but Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter could inspire me to create a great "Mad Hat"?

Hmmmm, I like the Johnny Mad Hatter best!

So let your imagination run wild and create a fabulous funky "Mad Hat."  If you'd like to use my hat pattern, click here, or see below.  I found that attaching the crown to the sides first worked best, then attach the brim.  I used a white glue similar to Elmer's so that I had a little time to manipulate the pieces.   Then I used hot glue to attach all my embellies.

 I used 7 Dots Wonderland collection to make my hat.  It was the perfect choice for my madness, LOL!!  The huge feather came from the floral dept at Hobby Lobby and the stems are Petaloo Cantebury vines from the Flying Unicorn store.  I used a mix of flowers from Manor House, Prima, and the Flying Unicorn an I added in a couple Melissa Frances Chandelier Drops to add to the magical madness.

The wooden bird is an embellishment from Michaels and the bird's nest is from Prima.  Underneath all the flowers I added a piece of upholstery "hairy" trim from Hobby Lobby.  Those are the stringy things you see peeking out. 

To finish off the other side of the hat I made 3 very long stick pins.  Thank you Bitsy for some of those beads!

One of my favorite embellishments on this hat is the metal heart from the Flying Unicorn Metal Adornments collections.

I have a new challenge going on at the Flying Unicorn - hope you'll join in! 

I could have named this challenge Do Over or Play it Again Sam, but in honor of all the June brides I decided to do my take on the Something old, something new, etc  phrase.

I love seeing how people's styles evolve over time.  I believe that our styles are constantly changing with the new trends in products and as we learn and apply new techniques that we have learned.  So I want to showcase these changes in my challenge.  You'll need something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue!  Be sure to check it out here!

Something new – 7 Dots papers, stick pins I just made, Manor House flowers

Something borrowed – technique used on the chipboard borrowed from the  very talented Shona, one of our CT members.  I mixed microbeads into white gesso and painted it on the chippy.  Then I sprinkled clear microbeads on the wet gesso here and there.  Finally I sprayed some Moonlight glimmer mist on the chippy here and there.

I gave these beautiful Manor House Fairy Floss flowers a quick spritz with  Snow Queen Glimmer Mist to add a touch of snowy sparkle.

I wanted a cold snowy effect so I dabbled gesso on the metal frame and letters.

May challenge at the Flying Unicorn

I'm hosting a fun challenge this month at the Flying Unicorn.  One of our members wrote these words and I've wanted to do a challenge using her quote ever since.  So often I hear scrappers say that scrapbooking is their stress relief, their happy place, this quote really expresses what so many of us feel about our craft. My challenge is to use this quote on a project, oh there are some other requirements, head on over to the Flying Unicorn forums and check it out.

Here is my layout that I created using a mix of 7 Dots Wonderland and Dreamer collections. I love love that paper!

These are Manor House blooms heavily sprayed with Black Magic Glimmer Mist.

And like all of our challenges, there is a great RAK to be won by some lucky randomly chosen scrapper!  Everyone is wanting that tool set in the back and those gorgeous Manor House blooms!!

Mandy's Flying Unicorn Paint It On Challenge.

Mandy is hosting a Paint it On challenge at the Flying Unicorn this month!  All you have to do is use paint on two separate items on your project.  There's a great RAK offered too, so go check it out!

Here's my inspiration piece for Mandy's challenge.  I used Prima Sun Kissed papers and 7 Dots Dreamer, both available at the Flying Unicorn store! the border cut mat and the scraps are 7 Dots. The flowers were made with a Spellbinders die and thank you to LisaG ( http://what-a-beautiful-mess.blogspot.com/) for her tute on these flowers.

Rockin' Round Robin at Flying Unicorn!

I have to believe we have the rockin' most fun Round Robin on the net!  Better put on your boots though cause it gets kind of thick over there sometimes!  There are alot of pot shots taken but its all in good fun and some seriously beautiful art going on too!

We have 7 teams and 29 players,  wow, isn't that fantastic!!!  So I am a team leader and here's the layout I made to get us started.   The theme of the Round Robin is April Showers Brings May Flowers.  Of course, there are lots and lots of beautiful flowers on everyone's layouts but I decided to go in a different direction so I just have a couple of blooms on mine.  I love Timmy's Umbrella Man so I grabbed the chance to feature him on my layout.

I used 7 Dots Dreamer pps for this. I used Dusty Attic chicken wire as a mask and misted the upper right corner with Lindy's Moonshadow Mist Ethereal Emerald. In certain lights you can see a beautiful emerald colors that match the 7 Dots paper. Moonshadow mists are really pretty but you usually have to see them in real to appreciate the look they give.

All around the photo I have used Lindy's fusible webbing. I sprinkled alot of metallic embossing powders on the webbing and a shot of color here and there and heated to make that. The two trees on the left are rusty metal that I found at a Pat Cantan's craft store in Ohio. The circle is Tim Holtz grungeboard that I had inked with copper I think, maybe some bronze in another life LOL. I have a little box that I keep left over "stuff" in that didn't get used and that was in there. I thought it would complement the LO, I guess its the sun.

Don't forget that the April kit reveals tomorrow, you are going to love it, it is sooo pretty!!!!  Better get in line at midnight tonight, it's going to sell out fast.  Oh and the OTP is truely awesome this month!!

Have you seen this fabulous new line from Poland from 7 Dots Studios, Wonderland now in the store?  It is so yummy gorgeous, the colors are so rich.  I decided to go grunge today as I need a break from frilly laces and flowers now and then!

Sooooo….where DID Chena and Escape Kitty find that treasure chest?  Oh those two, they’ve been sailing the high seas and roaming around the wilds of Australia for the last couple of months  (they’ve got Jen’s credit card this time, HA HA)  Looks like they stumbled on the Black Pearl and found the Deadman’s Chest.  Hmm, the least you could of done Chena, was gotten a photo with Johnny Depp in it!!  And are you bringing me some of those jewels, you know you could get out of debt that way.

Did either of you notice that your “comrade” there is holding a pistol in his hand??  Do you know why they call that a deadman’s chest?   You kids need to get some smarts and watch who you’re hanging out with!!  You are a dog and a cat, you really are not pirates my loves, you really need to get  a reality check!!!!  Please come home Chena, I am worried about your sweet furry face and Miss Kitty, she isn’t a pirate, she’s a sweet little cat and she belongs home with Stay Behind Cat. 

Hopefully this photo means the girls are sailing home from the wilds of Australia.  Sail safe Kitty, Chena be nice, don’t end up in the brig!!

I had a blast making this layout and really loaded up on some fun techiques.  I started with a base paper - Duchess,next I cut a piece of Spades and Clubs and used one side as a backdrop for the DA vine and the otehr side as a large mat behind the photo.  I also tucked in a piece of Mushroom and Smoke, that's the spotted paper.  I made some embellies from the spots that I cut out and covered with glossy accents.  The whole idea I'm trying to convey here is an underwater world, so the dots are things floating in the water.
I've tucked in some Dusty Attic fish net that I've stained with Lindy's Cattail Copper Brown mist and I layered in some burlap at the top.  Then the large photo mat is water distressed and heavily inked with Distress Black Soot and Scattered Straw.  Directly under the photo is Lindy's fusible webbing that I first inked with Prima inks in English Ivy and Blue Jay, then I sprinkled with Stampedous aged silver, emerald and sapphire embossing powders and heated to give it that great lacey effect.
The hinges are Tim Holtz grungeboard that I heat embossed with Stampendous aged silver, love that stuff, really gives a great aged look.    Just under the large photo mat, I stuffed  inked and crumpled old tax code!  Best use of tax code I've had in years! (I am a tax accountant.)  The letters are Kaisercraft chipboard that I covered with gold stickles.
I added a few shells and Prima vintage metals to finish it off.  I love how this came out, really fulfilled my need to get away from pretty!
