New Kaisercraft at the Flying Unicorn!

I ADORE this new collection, 75 Cents, from Kaisercraft, it is sooo vintage, so pretty, so me!!  LOL!!

Closeup of the Dusty Attic chippy, Vine Corners #0753.  I painted the chippy with Viva 3D Stamp Paint in metallic lime green.  I love this paint, it is really gorgeous, a couple things you need to know about this product - I don't know why it is called 3D Stamp paint, I could find nothing where it was used for stamping, although I'm sure you could.  Mostly I saw this used with masks where it was stippled on.  It has enough body so that you can get some texture from it if you paint it on thick, it has a beautiful sparkle and sheen and glides on really nice.

I used the Prima wooden title tiles from the February KOM for my title.  The butterfly tag is also from the Kaisercraft 75 Cents collection.

February KOM - Celebrate Every Love

Hi everyone, I am so excited to share a couple of layouts that I did using the just released February KOM from the Flying Unicorn store!   The kit features a beautiful mix of Forget-me-Not by KaiserCraft, Authentique Lovely Collection, and Bella J'adore papers.

For this first layout I jused mostly Kaisercraft's Forget-Me-Not collection added in some accents from Authentique.  I added the title chippy from my stash, its from ScrapFX and is available from the store.  One of my favorite products is Stampendous aged embossing enamel and I've embossed the chippy with Aged Spice and then dappled with white gesso.

I used wet distressing on this layout, that's a look that I really love.  First distress and ink the edges of your paper and then moisten the edges with your fingertips and pinch the papers into a pleasing look.  Then I inked again for additional emphasis.

I used a TCW mask and whilte gesso for the harlequin pattern masking and I used TCW Mini Tiles and Tsukineko Cornflower Walnut ink (comes in the kit!)

I really love these photos of my parents, as they really capture my Dad's playful personality, you can see he is sampling the icing in the 2nd photo!

Flannel & Footie PJ Crop at the Flying Unicorn!

We're having a weekend long crop at the Flying Unicorn and its going on right now!  Come join us, we've got some great challenges, RAKS. games and door prizes for everyone!

Here's my challenge, play along and be sure to post your project in the forum at the Flying Unicorn!

Many of us have been busy playing with mixed medias this month and that has been very fun and has sure turned on everyone's creativity.  But I had a longing to get back to one of my real loves and that is vintage styled layouts. I've used a photograph of my Mom and a friend that was taken during WW II.  When I think of vintage styling, I think muted and faded colors, dark colors, distressed papers, pearls and rhinestones, roses, laces and doilies, photo corners and of course, black and white or sepia toned photos.

My challenge to you is to create a vintage styled LO, card or tag, easy enough!!  And of course we have to have a few rules to make it interesting!!  So on your LO I want to see:

1. Distressed and inked edges on your papers
2.  Bling and or pearls
3.  Lace
4. Either a black and white or sepia photo or a vintage image of some sort.
5. A doily - you can used purchased doilies or make your own.

I've used Prima's Romance Novel for my LO.  Here's a list of supplies that I used and links to the store.

Patterned paper:  PrimaRomance Novel collection:  frame and circle-Love Storysmall circle and base – Harlequin, rose note paper – Dear John,

Chipboard:  Prima Romance Novel Chipboard Stickers;

Flowers:    black-Prima Vinetta Nature Garden; Petaloo Cantebury Roses and Berries Branch white; Prima Tea Roses Peach Frost

Ink:  Distress Pumice Stone, Tattered Rose; Mix’d Media Inx-Black

Other:  Prima Romance Novel collection: Black Velvet Trinkets, Decorative Wood Embellishments (clock faces); Kaisercraft Rhinestone Ice Flourish (January KOM)

Unknown:  Lace from the January KOM

Hope to see you in the  Flannel and Footie
 forum!

Studio 75 for sale at the Flying Unicorn Store!

We just got in some yummy yummy new paper from a new company in Poland, Studio 75.  We have 3 collections, Winter Time, Sweet Home and Summer and Latte.  The papers are really heavy weight and as such, are great for globbing on the mixed media as I did in the layout below.  I have used lots of Glimmer Snow and fiber paste on this layout!

One little tip I will pass on to you is that if you carefully heat the Glimmer Snow before it dries with your heat gun, it puffs up a little and takes on a more snowlike appearance.

Flying Unicorn challenges!

Did you know that we have at least 10 challenges going on at the Flying Unicorn every month, and often more than that?  And did you know that all of our challenges have a randomly chosen winner to receive a great RAK from the Flying Unicorn store?

If you know me very well, you know that I love to write and I can go on and on and on maybe even you wish I would shut up, LOL!!  And you know I love to design a good challenge, one that pulls you out of your comfort zone, that's why we call them challenges, right?

My challenge, I've been waiting forever...

I am in the mood to read your stories this month so I want you to do a little journaling!  I know, most people don't like to journal but really you need to get those stories down on paper because one day you aren't going to remember them!!

The challenge is to do a layout, easy right?  Ah ha, you must also include some journaling and you must use the words "I've been waiting forever" somewhere in your journaling.  You can hide your journal or put it on the page, either is ok. Mine is hidden in a pocket on the left side, as you can see it is a long story.

Here's my inspiration for you.

The journal:

I’ve been waiting forever to see this plant bloom!

Right after we moved to Alaska, one of the gals that Dick worked with gave us some house plant cuttings.  One of the things she gave us was a member of the cactus family, a night bloom cereus.  We’ve always called it the ugly plant though because, well, it’s kinda ugly!  Of course in Alaska it didn’t get a lot of sun since our house was on 2 wooded acres and then there’s that whole winter dark thing going on in Fairbanks!

However, it managed to live through the five years we spent in Fairbanks and when it came time to move we discovered that although it was an ugly plant, we had become rather attached to it so we wanted to take it with us.  But as moving goes, there was no room for it so we decided we would put in Dick’s Model T which was going inside a dark trailer that we were towing to our new home in Denver. We figured it might live and it was worth a try as there was no where else to put it.  I was elate when, three weeks later, I unloaded it from the “T” to find it very much alive.  Not only is that plant ugly, it’s very hardy!

After that long dark trip, I thought what the plant needed now was a sun bath so I left it outside in the hot Denver sun.  Hmmmm, that was not a good idea, it promptly got sunburned!  Oh but that plant is hardy, it survived that too.  Well now, for the next 8 years the ugly plant lived on in a dark corner in our Denver home.  It didn’t look all that great, but it was hanging in there.

Now in NC we have a lovely windowed corner and I thought the ugly plant would be very happy there and so it was!  For the first time in its life it was thriving, loving the daily dose of sunshine. Finally in 2011 in blessed us with two blooms.  I was so excited but unfortunately, the blooms open only once and only at night.  Well, do you think we got to see those two blooms open???  Noooo, of course not, we go to bed with the chickens so of course we are not awake in the dead of the night when the blooms open.

In 2012 we had four blooms on the plant.  Well I contained my excitement knowing that I would most likely sleep right through the blossoms opening.  But then the magic happened, a good friend from Florida had just arrived at our house and we were chatting in the living room when all of a sudden I interrupted everyone exclaiming, look, look, the blossoms are open!  The blossoms were a lovely creamy white and at least 6” across.  It was a long wait, 17 years to be exact, but well worth it, I’ve never seen anything lovelier!

I used the December kit to do this LO, I loved the embossed papers in the kit-this is the one with the birdcages on it.  I lightly sanded it to bring out the embossed images.

Supplies:

Patterned paper:  Ruby Rock-it Mother Nature collection:  Frame Royale, Birdcage embossed-Mother Nature embossed, Diamond print-flutterby, nusic pp-harmony, dotted-pensive
Letters:  Thickers foam Subway  (from a previous kit)
Diecuts and punches: Spellbinders Bella Rose die and stamps for Heartfelt Creations
Flowers:    Manor House blue, DA celestial white
Ink:  Distress pumice stone, weathered wood
Mist:  Lindy’s Ponderosa Pines Olive, Glimmer Mist Snowy Pine
Other:  Pink Paislee Artisan Elements (circles)

And here is the RAK you could win, all you have to do is play in the challenge for a chance to win!

Off the Page with the Flying Unicorn & the January KOM, Carpe Diem!

One of the greatest things about the kits from the Flying Unicorn is that the main kit ALWAYS includes an off the page project.  This is such a great value because in addition to great papers and embellies, you get a fun OTP for a more than reasonable price!

The January OTP is especially nice, its a great box with a 6 x 6 mini inside, already for you to scrap and make it your very own special project.  Because I got my January kit in December, I chose to make a mini to give my Mom for Christmas with photos of her great grandchildren in it.

I used a combination of the Magnolia 6 x 6 papers that come with the OTP and Prima Londonderry papers for my OTP.

I first painted the box bottom with Delta Ceramcoat metallic gold acrylic paint that came in the December 2011 kit.  Love that I still had some left from a year ago to use on this!  After that was dry I applied a thick coat of Ranger Crackle Accents.  I let that air dry (don't use a heat gun here, let it dry naturally) and then rubbed Distress walnut stain into the cracks and a bit of  Rub 'm Buff in Ebony.

The edge of the lid was painted with Viva Inka-Gold that came in the kit and then ebony Rub 'n Buff was applied to the edges and corners on both the lid and box.

Inka-gold is a really fun product, be sure to watch my two videos on how to use it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AnO6d7D4UE&list=UUHgm7Ve-qUEy1h99G8Pz97A&index=2

I decorated the top with a resin Prima frame that I brushed gold Inka-gold  into the crevices for that french antique look and in the frame center is a rose made from air dry clay.  Here's a very similar frame in the store.  I also added some Dusty Attic chippies from my stash that I embossed with Stampendous Ivory Aged Embossing Enamel.  This is my favorite product discovery of 2012!!!  I love it, it looks so great on  chippys and it comes in lots of colors.  Be sure to check it out!

The small gold and cream flowers came in the January kit and the larger cream flowers came from my stash.  I made the stick pin.

On the cover I've used crowns from the January kit and letters and flowers from a prior kit, Londonerry and Magnolia papers.

My mojo has been seriously missing for some time now, that is until the January kit arrived on my doorstep!  I just love the BasicGrey Serenade and Pink Paislee papers in the kit.  The papers and colors are so fun and playful and I thought were perfect for scrapping these pictures I took of a Mama grizzly bear and her her cub in Hyder, Alaska.

There is a great Tattered Angels mask in the embellishment add on kit, I thought it kind of looked like waves and was perfect for this LO.  I also mimiced the frothy water with cheesecloth.

The main kit included the Studio Calico hexagon mask that I used on this layout, I love the texture it creates.

And don't you just love the Fancy Pants corrugated paper that is in the kit?  I misted, painted,  pasted, masked and inked on the background.  You could say that it's an artist's playground!  The flowers on this page are from previous kits and the green vines are Petaloo from the store.

Be sure to visit the KOM group at the Flying Unicorn for more details on these layouts and creations from all the  Creative Team.

My vegetarian dog & the January Flying Unicorn KOM

I really loved working with the January Flying Unicorn KOM, it is so fun and playful, its perfect to pull you out of the winter blues!

Here we have the silly Chena picking cherry tomatos! If you look closely in the first photo you can see a tomato in her mouth.  We have to fence our garden to keep the dogs out or they would completely strip the vines!

Journal:
I’ve never seen a dog that loved vegetables as much as Chena!  The 1st year we had a garden, Chena learned to take her snout and root through the bean vines and pull off the mature beans. Tomatoes?  Well just like me, she only picked the ripe ones! I’m not sure which is her favorite, green beans or tomatoes.  Then there was time I planted sugar snaps on the fence.  I’d see Chena running across the yard with a long pea vine stringing out behind her; then she would stop and eat the whole thing!  We had to fence the garden to keep her out; so then, she would sit at the edge of the garden, whine and look at me with those sad puppy dog eyes!

Supplies from the kit:

Patterned paper:  BasicGrey Serenade collection:  Base-york, orange circle-Parlor, beige circle-avalon, circle under small photo-chemise, sweet robin from the BasicGrey packaging
